Students Or Recent Graduates: Don't Risk Being Uninsured...
For many people, college is one of the most carefree times of their life. Sure, at times it may seem like you don’t have any time for fun, or that all your professors are conspiring to crush you under an immense workload, but you know you’re having a blast. For most people, college helps them get better jobs and begin solid careers quickly, and they will always be able to look back on those years and realize how much fun they had. However, for many students their carefree attitude makes them overlook the necessity for health coverage.

Many students have the mentality that “hey, I’m young. I’m not at risk for anything serious, and I have the student health plan.” It’s true, the student health plan is a great thing, especially when you’re out of cash and you’re suddenly too sick to do anything about it. However, most student health plans only cover your typical doctor visits for minor things. Even though students are not at a great risk for cancer, heart problems, or any other number of serious complications that plague older people, students are at an even greater risk of having an incidental accident that results in a hospital visit. Despite the fact that you’re young and invincible, even tough guys and girls need stitches if their

bike goes end over end on the way to class or if a fight breaks out at a party. Regardless of the fact that stitches are extremely quick and simple to do, they can easily cost a thousand dollars between the materials, paying for the hospital room, and the doctor. If you think you’re broke now, just imagine having to fork over a thousand dollars unexpectedly.

Another risk that many students do not consider is the possibility of a car accident. Even in accidents that are 100% someone else’s fault, you could be stuck paying the hospital bills until you are willing to settle with the other person’s company. Many people without health end up settling prematurely to get the hospital off their back and they do not receive the proper therapy they need to completely recover from the accident.

The other scenario that many students are not aware of is that even if they are covered under their family’s policy when they’re in college, if they take a semester off or graduate, they are usually not valid for coverage. This can be risky for students who need a break or recent graduates who are under the impression that they are still covered under an policy.

The other risk associated with no having is how you will be treated if you do need to go to a hospital. In many states, hospitals are allowed to treat people who lack differently than patients who have health insurance. Many times, if you do not have any insurance, hospitals are only required by law to stabilize your condition, which means they are likely to treat the symptoms without trying to find the cause or actually fix the problem. Although it is rare, this has lead to death because a hospital did not give a patient the treatment they needed.

Luckily there is affordable health available, especially if you need short term coverage to get you through a period that you are going to be out of school, between graduation and getting a job with insurance, or even if you plan on hiking or rock climbing on summer vacation. There is a wide variety of different policies available, but there are several types that are designed for student or young people that need coverage for a short time.

For the majority of young people, they have little need for frequent visits to the doctor or prescription medication. The biggest risk for young people is unexpected injury because of the high level of physical activity and risk taking that most people do when they are this age. If this is the case, you can benefit from a policy that offers little coverage on doctor visits (which are probably covered on your student health plan), but will pay for nearly all the expenses related to going to the emergency room or having a surgery. This type of coverage appeals to many young people since they are unlikely to go to the doctor very often, but will be hurt financially if they wake up in the hospital without any and a bill of several thousand dollars.

One thing that keeps many young people from getting is the fact that is seen as expensive to have whether you use it or not. This is true in many cases, but there are policies for nearly every budget. When purchasing insurance, there is a balance between the monthly premium and the deductible you will have to pay to actually use your policy. Most young people would benefit from having a health policy that has a low premium, so they pay a smaller amount each month, but if they use the policy, the deductible will be somewhat higher. This is probably the best setup if you do not expect to use your policy very often. Although you will have a higher deductible, your monthly payments will be much lower. If you decide to have a higher premium so that your deductible is not as high, you will pay more each month whether you use your policy or not. For many young people, especially considering short term coverage, a low premium and higher deductible make the most sense.

However, if you do expect to visit the doctor frequently, you can look at how often you will go, if you need prescription medication, and use these factors to find the best value for you. Even if this is the case, you may find that you need to see a doctor and get prescriptions 5-10 times a year in order for a policy with a higher premium to pay for itself. The balance between premium and deductible should be determined by whether you need to disburse the costs of expected doctors’ visits or if you need in the event of an accident or unexpected surgery.

Hopefully you will never have to use an policy for a serious accident or illness, but if this occurs, you’ll be glad you had insurance
