News Update: Sprint Nextel Corp. Releases Samsung Epic 4G Smart Phone (S,VZ,GOOG,AAPL)

Hot on the heels of the release of its HTC Evo 4G, Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S) unveiled its Samsung Epic 4G smart phone Monday, featuring a slide-out keyboard and four-inch touchscreen.

Sprint’s Epic boasts push email for business-minded buyers, an integrated calendar and Exchange ActiveSync corporate email.

Epic will operate on the Android 2.1 operating system, with the ability to upgrade to the more secure, enterprise-ready Android 2.2, or Froyo, soon, according to Sprint officials.

Sprint officials said the company plans to offer Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Mobile Services, but have not disclosed details on upgraded security features, better device management, pricing or delivery information.

The Epic is Samsung’s first 4G Android smart phone, which works on 4G and 3G CDMA networks.

The smart phone is entering the market at a tough time in terms of competition; Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) also launched a rival Samsung phone Monday called the Fascinate, reports ComputerWorld, and Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4 has already sold 1.7 million units in its first three days on tech shelves since its Thursday, June 24th launch.

Shares of Sprint are trading up 5.36% Monday afternoon at $4.43.

    @SepirothsTwinn88 …
    @SepirothsTwinn88 Yeah I know with the Samsung [random model name] they had hardware issues and couldn’t update to the newest Android OS. But Sprint and Samsung have both said the Epic4G will get 2.2 when it comes out. I frankly don’t care what OS it has as long as power management isn’t crap.
    What’s the big deal with Samsung’s overlay TouchWiz3.0?

    @BlackKnightSkye As of now.. No. But the good news is , is that HTC pushed out a OTA update for the EVO this morning and it has improved battery life TREMENDOUSLY. I had decent life but now I have seen major improvement. But this thing is a beast as well. I’m just really leery wen it comes to Samsung updating their phones….

  14. Great info, I’m a guy through Detroit that is about to consider his first genuine dive in to the Android, foreseeing it really is best obtained through acquiring the Samsung Fascinate. It is been a long hold out, including purchasing a HTC Desire and cancelling which due to receiving information about this phone, and in my personal little quest for details to pass the time I ultimately found this wonderful site.

  15. Just purchased a Mythic for myself and will probably be having 1 for my wife quickly! It has just the proper mix of characteristics. just short of a full smartphone. I’m preserving an eye about the Captivate for any possible long term cell phone…costs are way as well high when released. I’ve been in substantial tech for 20+ years and essentially hack anything I own to generate it better laptops, GPS, car navigation methods, etc. and yes cell phones too. Within the couple of days I’ve owned the telephone I have currently installed Opera Mini, Bolt 2.1, freecaddie, Google Maps w/GPS functionality, deleted all locked ineffective apps immediately after backing them up and fully modified the menu process to my exact requirements devoid of all unproductive apps.
