The agency reported U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data Thursday that showed the state losing a total of 5,900 public and private nonfarm jobs in April, compared with March. The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, nonetheless, dipped another tenth of a percentage point to 6.7 percent and is now down from 7.5 percent in April 2011.

Salesforce stock up after hours on Q1 earnings
Salesforce.com inc. on Thursday reported first quarter revenue of $695 million, an increase of 38 percent on a year-over-year basis.
San Francisco-based company (NYSE:CRM), with offices in San Mateo, provides enterprise cloud computing applications. It reported a net loss for the first quarter of $19.5 million, or 14 cents per share.
The company's stock dropped $2.78 per share to close at $133.80. It was trading up more than 7 percent after hours.

Applied Materials Q2 revenue beats analyst expectations
Applied Materials Inc.'s stock closed Thursday at $10.48 per share. It was trading down nearly 1 percent after hours. The company on Thursday reported net income of $289 million, or 22 cents per share, compared to $489 million, or 37 cents per share, in the same quarter of last year.

Bill would prevent Facebook co-founder from evading taxes
Legislation has been introduced by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and and Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) that would prevent executives such as Facebook Inc. co-founder Eduardo Saverin from avoiding taxes by giving up their U.S. citizenship.
Saverin renounced his U.S. citizenship in September and lives in Singapore, according Business Journals Washington Bureau Chief Kent Hoover.

Facebook Inc. sold its shares in its initial public offering Thursday afternoon at $38 a share, raising $16 billion in the biggest tech IPO in history.

HP said to plan 25,000-30,000 job cuts
Hewlett-Packard Co. will reportedly announce plans to cut between 25,000 and 30,000 jobs over the next year or so when it posts earnings next week.
Reports that cite unnamed sources on AllThingsDigital, Bloomberg and Business Insider vary on the size of the work force reduction at Palo Alto-based HP (NYSE:HPQ).
The restructuring will reportedly include a number of voluntary retirement packages, with AllThingsDigital putting that number at about 5,000 people.

Freedom Communications Inc. has sold four papers in the Midwest to an affiliate of Philadelphia private equity firm Versa Capital Management LLC.
The four papers are:

CalPERS ups contributions for state employee pensions
California will pay 5.7 percent more in the next fiscal year for state employee pensions, according to the California Public Employees? Retirement System.
The state of California will pay $3.7 billion in fiscal 2012-2013, which begins in July, up from $3.5 billion it is paying in the current fiscal year.
The CalPERS board of administration approved the new rates Wednesday. They will go into effect July 1.

California jobless claims rise by 1,600

California, however, saw an increase in new claims.
The four-week moving average was 375,000, or a drop of 4,750 from the previous week.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits was 6,273,624, a decrease of 149,759 from the previous week.

MIG Real Estate makes first buy in Texas

California mortgage, consumer debt drops
<img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/stlouis/creditcards3*100.jpg?v=1'>The average Californian owes less in credit card and mortgage debt than they did last year, according to a new report, but credit scores still dropped a little.
According a monthly report from Credit Karma, Californians owed $303,745 in mortgage debt in April, compared to $309,579 in March and $311,551 in April 2011.

Skechers settles false advertising suit
<img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/losangeles/news/kimkardashian*100.jpg?v=1'>Manhattan Beach's Skechers USA Inc. shoe company has settled a lawsuit accusing the company of false claims that its ?rocker-bottom? shoes promote weight loss and muscle strength. The company has also allocated as much as $40 million for consumer refunds nationwide.
Details about obtaining a refund are available on the Federal Trade Commission?s website.
The FTC, the District of Columbia and 44 attorneys general nationwide were involved in the lawsuit.

Boeing prepares for U.S. defense spending cuts
Boeing Co., which has operations from its Defense, Space and Security division throughout Southern California, said it is preparing for the "distinct possibility" that U.S. defense spending will be cut by a total of $1 trillion over the next decade, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The defense division has laid off about 8,000 of 60,000 jobs over the past 18 months, but most of those positions have been shifted to other departments inside the company, such as the commercial sector.

USC on cusp of Coliseum control
The University of Southern California is on the cusp of controlling its home football venue -- the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum -- as the Coliseum Commission approved a measure that would give USC control of the venue, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The vote was approved 8-to-1, the report said.
Under the new lease, USC would control the facility until 2054. USC would fun $70 million in upgrades and take control of the revenue.

Proposed budget cuts hit court system

The governor?s proposed May revision of the state of California budget includes a $300 million cut in trial court funding. It also delays $240 in spending on trial court construction and seeks to save $4 million by increasing retirement contribution for state court employees.
