The Common Denominator of Success in Work Clothes: G&L Clothes & Carhartt
By Wayne Messick
Behind their website is a real clothing store with a sales staff of real people. G&L Clothing has been serving customers in downtown Des Moines, Iowa for almost 90 years.

Last month we launched a new feature on our web site that we hope will allow successful business owners like them to provide our readers with a thumbnail view of their company. G&L Clothing is the first company we're publishing.

Originally the only profiles we published were those of people who were interviewed extensively by one of our staff. Their the story was written and published with much back and forth that limited the number of success stories we could tell.

G&L Clothing is located in Des Moines, Iowa and has been an institution of downtown Des Moines for nearly nine decades. Over the years they've lived in a number of buildings throughout the area. After a fire destroyed our previous location, we built our current store at 1801 Ingersoll Ave and moved in on October 1st, 1996.

2000, continuing to expand, they purchased another building behind their store to increase their warehouse space and provide more offices for their growing online and commercial businesses.

G&L dates back to 1917, when Lou Garsh and Meyer Levine first opened their doors. They sold work clothing, shoes and boots to railroaders, construction workers, farmers and tradesmen. Garsh left six months later, but Levine never got around to changing the name.

Today, G&L Clothing is owned the Marcovis family and serves working men and women throughout Iowa and the world!

According to Justin Schoen, Director Online Sales & Operations, "Our store sells work, casual and dress clothing in regular, big and tall sizes from brands like Carhartt, Dickies, Levi’s®, Dockers®, Wrangler, Savane and more. Our huge selection of Carhartt has made us one the nation’s largest independent retailer and the largest Carhartt outlet in the Midwest!"

There are some pictures of G&L Clothing and their massive inventory of Carhartt, Dickies, Levi's, Wrangler and more on their eCommerce web site.

As you can see when you visit their web site, http://www.gandlclothing.com G&L carries jeans, causal pants, work pants and dress slacks pants from 26 inches to 80 inches in size; and sweatshirts, t-shirts, jackets and coats from size medium to 10X big and 5X tall.

Over the years we've profiled seventy five companies like G&L Clothing - companies from about thirty industries averaging forty years old.

With this new profile submission process we hope to do many more. Please tell us your company's story!
