According to an analysis of federal data by On Numbers, a Nashville Business Journal affiliate, Nashville added 9,200 jobs in the private sector in 2011, No. 29 in the country. Nashville?s growth represents a one-year percentage change of 1.47 percent, No. 36 in the country.

Atlanta-based AutoTrader.com has some interesting data on car commercials from Sunday?s big game.
Volkswagen, Honda, Acura, Toyota, Hyundai, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Fiat, Kia, Chrysler and Cadillac all ran Super Bowl ads. Between 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, more than 30 car commercials aired. Of those vehicles showcased, six performed the highest among shopper searches on the AutoTrader.com website.

</div>Proxy battle looms at J. Alexander'sAn Atlanta hedge fund is hoping to replace the entire board of directors at Nashville-based restaurant chain J. Alexander's Corp. (Nasdaq: JAX).
Privet Fund LP, which owns approximately 12.6 percent of the restaurant company, has submitted four nominees for election at the company?s annual shareholder meeting.
"It's our belief that the company would benefit from the inclusion of new directors," wrote Ryan Levenson, head of Privet, in a letter to J. Alexander?s earlier this month.

</div>O'Charley's Inc. to be purchased by Fidelity National<img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/nashville/news/OCharleysweblogo*100.jpg?v=1'>Nashville-based O'Charley's Inc. (Nasdaq: CHUX) announced today it has signed an agreement to be purchased by Fidelity National Financial Inc. (NYSE: FNF).
According to a news release from O?Charley?s, Fidelity National will purchase all of O'Charley's outstanding shares of common stock for $9.85 per share, a 42 percent premium over the stock?s previous closing price of $6.92. The acquisition represents an investment of $221 million.

Microsoft Store coming next to Apple's at Stanford Shopping Center
Microsoft Corp. plans to open its second retail store next to the Apple Store at Stanford Shopping Center, copying what it did with the first at Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose.

Honeywell sues smart thermostat maker Nest over patents
Honeywell Corp. said on Monday it has sued smart thermostat developer Nest Labs Inc. for patent infringement.
The lawsuit filed at United States District Court for the District of Minnesota alleges that the Palo Alto company infringes on seven Honeywell patents related to its thermostat technology.
The lawsuit also names Best Buy, which sells the Nest Labs thermostat.
The patents named in the lawsuit include some related to use of natural language and user interfaces and a thermostat?s inner design...<div class="feedflare">

Heritage Bank promotes Benito to executive VP
Heritage Bank of Commerce said Monday it has promoted Michael Benito to executive vice president/business banking division manager.
Heritage Bank of Commerce is a subsidiary of San Jose-based bank holding company Heritage Commerce Corp. (NASDAQ:HTBK).
Benito has been with the company for nine years as senior vice president, director of sales and business development.

Best Buy asks,'Would you pay $1,499 for an Apple TV?'
A customer survey reportedly done by Best Buy on possible price and features for a TV from Apple Inc. has fanned speculation that such a device might come this year.
The Verge website reported that the survey asked customers if they would be interested in spending $1,499 for an HDTV from Apple and listed various features, some of which are considered highly unlikely from the Cupertino company.
Among the features listed that are considered possible if Apple does produce a TV are support for the App Store, iOS, and iCloud, and using iPhones or iPads as remotes...<div class="feedflare">

Foundation Capital said Monday former Twitter product manager Anamitra Banerji has joined the firm as an entrepreneur in residence (EIR).
In his role with Menlo Park-based Foundation Capital, Banerji is expected to focus on online collaboration and mobile industries, identifying promising startups and acting as a consultant in the investment process.

LS9 adds Rood as VP, operations
LS9 Inc. said Monday it has hired Gregory Rood as vice president of operations.
The South San Francisco-based company develops renewable and sustainable products.
In his new role, Rood will be in charge of LS9's operations in Okeechobee, Fla., future production sites, and overseeing external contract manufacturing and operational interests in anticipated LS9 joint ventures.
Rood was previously the senior vice president of operations at Martek Biosciences Corp.

Yahoo's Asian deal to officially close in 2013
Yahoo Inc. and its Asian partners are working on a deal that is not expected to officially close until 2013, All Things Digital's Kara Swisher points out in an article on Monday.
The definitive agreement centers around selling Sunnyvale-based Yahoo's (NASDAQ:YHOO) 33 percent stake in China?s Alibaba Group and 35 percent stake in Yahoo Japan, with a Feb. 24 target date to seal the deal that could now be pushed back to mid-March.

Worldwide semiconductor sales hit record $299.5B
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday that worldwide semiconductor sales hit a record $299.5 billion for 2011, or a year-on-year increase of 0.4 percent from $298.3 billion in 2010.
The Washington, D.C.-based group represents U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and design.

Facebook to start mobile ads prior to IPO?
Facebook reportedly plans to start showing ads to users of its mobile sites next month as it prepares for its initial public offering in May.
Mobile was cited by the company in the potential risks section of its IPO filing last week, saying that it hadn't begun to monetize the user stream that accounts for about half of its traffic, and growing.
The Menlo Park-based social networking giant has discussed proposals with unidentified advertising agencies for displaying "featured stories" ? essentially sponsored ads ? in the news feed seen by users on the site.<div class="feedflare">

Mobeam adding funds to Series A round
Mobeam said it has added $1.5 million to the $4.9 million Series A round it announced in October 2011.
The San Francisco-based company specializes in patented, light-based communications technology with applications in mobile commerce.
The company has added investor DFJ Athena, a Korea-focused venture fund affiliated with Menlo Park-based Draper Fisher Jurvetson, as well as new funds from existing investor and board chairman Ben DuPont. DFJ and its network manage more than $7 billion.<div class="feedflare">

Board members had agreed that if they didn't raise enough to meet the $1 million goal, they would close the doors of the theater permanently.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen: most generous living donor

First a deal with Verizon; now Coinstar buys a competitor

Kidder Mathews predicts increase in hotel sales in 2012

The Seattle-based commercial real estate brokerage said hotel real estate investment trusts are picking up top-tier hotel properties in anticipation of a significant near-term bump in room rates as the post-recession economy continues to recover.

Lantow, Numata named to Columbia Banking System board
Michelle Lantow and S. Mae Fujita Numata have been named to the board of directors of Columbia Banking System, the parent company of Tacoma-based Columbia Bank.

Typhoon! closes remaining five restaurants
Typhoon! Restaurants Inc. closed its remaining five restaurants Saturday, with Bo Kline, president of the Portland, Ore.-based chain saying she was unable to continue running the business following the death of her husband.
Steve Kline died in August after having a heart attack.
"As many in the community are aware, I lost my husband, my business and life partner, Steve, last year," Kline said in a news release. "Without his energy, support and commitment, operating Typhoon! has required much more attention than I am able to give and has begun to take a toll on my health...<div class="feedflare">

Coinstar in DVD/streaming video deal with Verizon
Coinstar Inc. and Verizon Monday announced a joint venture that will allow consumers to stream Redbox DVDs using Verizon's download service.
The new service will launch in the second half of 2012. Verizon will hold a 65 percent ownership share of the joint venture and Bellevue-based Coinstar's (NASDAQ: CSTR) Redbox unit will hold a 35 percent ownership share, according to a statement.<div class="feedflare">
