Freedom Communications Inc. has sold four papers in the Midwest to an affiliate of Philadelphia private equity firm Versa Capital Management LLC. CalPERS ups contributions for state employee pensions
California will pay 5.7 percent more in the next fiscal year for state employee pensions, according to the California Public Employees? Retirement System. The state of California will pay $3.7 billion in fiscal 2012-2013, which begins in July, up from $3.5 billion it is paying in the current fiscal year. California jobless claims rise by 1,600

California mortgage, consumer debt drops

USC on cusp of Coliseum control
The University of Southern California is on the cusp of controlling its home football venue -- the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum -- as the Coliseum Commission approved a measure that would give USC control of the venue, according to the Los Angeles Times. The vote was approved 8-to-1, the report said. Under the new lease, USC would control the facility until 2054. USC would fun $70 million in upgrades and take control of the revenue. Salesforce stock up after hours on Q1 earnings
Salesforce.com inc. on Thursday reported first quarter revenue of $695 million, an increase of 38 percent on a year-over-year basis. San Francisco-based company (NYSE:CRM), with offices in San Mateo, provides enterprise cloud computing applications. Applied Materials Q2 revenue beats analyst expectations
Applied Materials Inc.'s stock closed Thursday at $10.48 per share. It was trading down nearly 1 percent after hours. Bill would prevent Facebook co-founder from evading taxes
Legislation has been introduced by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and and Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) that would prevent executives such as Facebook Inc. co-founder Eduardo Saverin from avoiding taxes by giving up their U.S. citizenship. HP said to plan 25,000-30,000 job cuts
Hewlett-Packard Co. will reportedly announce plans to cut between 25,000 and 30,000 jobs over the next year or so when it posts earnings next week. MarkLogic hires eMeter's Gary Bloom as new CEO

The San Carlos-based company specializes in powering big data applications.
