</div>California teachers union wants ?millionaires tax? to pay for schoolsA proposal backed by the California Federation of Teachers would hit millionaires with extra taxes in hopes of raising more money for the state?s schools and colleges.
The proposed initiative has been approved for signature gathering -- it needs to get 504,760 of them by July 2 to make it onto the ballot.
It adds 3 percent to the personal income tax rate for people who make more than $1 million and adds 5 percent for those earning over $2 million.

The plans for the new 20,000-square-foot hall that will connect to Farmers Field, a $1.1 billion football stadium planned for downtown Los Angeles, were presented Thursday to a special council committee overseeing the convention center and stadium projects. </div> Transocean fined $310M in Norway for allegedly underreporting profit The Norwegian government has fined units of Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) $310 million for allegedly underreporting taxable income in 2001 and 2002.
The Swiss oil rig operator, that has operations in Houston, said the claims are without merit and it will contest the claims, Bloomberg reports.
The Norwegian government is also looking to collect part of the $310 million in fines from employees of accounting firm Ernst & Young and Thommessen, a Norwegian law firm.

(Nasdaq: MFRM) has plans to hire close to 100 new Houston employees and open between three and four new Houston-area stores in 2012.
Ken Murphy, Mattress Firm?s executive vice president of sales and operations, said in an interview that the company is not only expanding at its headquarters in Houston, but it is also expanding its retail footprint nationwide.

</div> UTMB Galveston to open renovated maternity center <img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/houston/news/interior%20of%20room*100.jpg?v=1'>The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston will open a renovated maternity center at its John Sealy Hospital Feb. 15.
The hospital, which faced major damage after Hurricane Ike in 2008, embarked on a $36 million modernization project to update its facilities after the storm that was the subject of a feature print edition article in Houston Business Journal last September.
Now, the branch is about to complete its renovation of the maternity center, which has 16 private labor-delivery and recovery suites, five triage rooms, four prolonged observation rooms and one fetal surgery room...<div class="feedflare">

</div> Houston added most U.S. private-sector jobs in 2011 The Houston-area added 63,400 private-sector jobs between 2010 and 2011, more than any other market in the U.S.
In total, Houston supported 2.21 million private-sector jobs in 2011, according to an analysis of preliminary U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by the Business Journals? On Numbers. The official statistics will be released at the end of the month.
After Houston, another Texas city ? Dallas ? added the most private-sector jobs in the past year, 62,500 jobs.

</div> RoomStore holds bankruptcy sales for all Houston stores <img src='http://assets.bizjournals.com/houston/news/Houston%20Brittmoore%20Location*100.jpg?v=1'>The RoomStore is launching bankruptcy liquidation sales at all five of its stores in the Houston area.
One of the largest furniture chains in Texas, the Dallas-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2011, and it announced plans to close 14 stores across the state, including all of the Houston stores.
RoomStore will be selling off the entire inventory in its five Houston locations during the liquidation sale.

</div> U.S. shale boom grows demand for oil field chemicals The shale boom in the U.S. is driving much of the demand for oil field chemicals, a new report from IHS shows.
According to the IHS Chemical 2012 Oil Field Chemicals Report, much of the global demand is being met by North American companies, which account for more than $8 billion of the $16 billion in sales for 2010.
Demand for these chemicals is projected to grow by an average rate of 3.5 percent during the next five years, with sales expected to reach almost $19 billion by 2015.
Despite global economic uncertainty, the market grew based on a rising oil price, which made drilling efforts more attractive, the report said...<div class="feedflare">
