Hawaii jobless rate edges downward to 6.3 percent in April
Hawaii?s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent in April, compared with 6.6 percent a year ago, the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations said Thursday. The statewide jobless rate last month was also lower than the March unemployment rate of 6.4 percent. The U.S. Postal Service said Thursday that it will begin closing 48 mail processing plants on the Mainland this summer as part of a cost-cutting plan to trim $1.2 billion from the agency?s budget in response to a declining volume of mail. Initial unemployment claims fall sharply in Hawaii
The number of initial unemployment claims filed in Hawaii last week dropped 31 percent when compared to the same week last year, according to the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. New York state approves land bank application
The board of Empire State Development Corp., New York's economic development arm, Thursday approved a joint application from Schenectady County, the city of Schenectady and the city of Amsterdam to create one of New York?s first land banks. Land banks have the power to buy, hold, manage and develop foreclosed, vacant and abandoned properties. HP to cut up to 25,000 jobs (report); no word on Mass. layoffs

(NYSE: HPQ) may cut as many as 25,000 jobs, or 8 percent of its workforce, according to a report from Bloomberg News that cites people familiar with the matter. HP employs about 3,000 employees in Massachusetts, including at their Andover and Marlborough campuses. The Marlborough campus is around 133,000 square feet and is leased until 2016. Broker-Dealer ordered to recover $1M+ in annuities sold to elderly widow

Beck, a Maryland-based broker-dealer, has been ordered by the Massachusetts Secretary of State to refund more than $1 million in annuities improperly sold to an elderly widow by one of its representatives.
